Dorset Council Adopts Dark Sky Friendly Street Lighting Policy

14th October 2025

In January, Dorset Council consulted us regarding a revision of its streetlighting policy. As a result of that consultation, a new street lighting policy was developed, taking into account the most recent principles of responsible lighting.

We were delighted to hear that, at its meeting on 9th September 2025, Dorset Council’s Cabinet agreed to adopt this policy. This will be implemented over the next two to three years during which the service provider will replace 18,500 outdated luminaires.

The Cabinet’s reasoning for the decision is as follows:

“Limiting colour temperatures for new and replacement street lighting in Dorset would bring health, ecological and dark sky benefits. The policy took a Dorset specific approach to street lighting that balances modern technological advancements, health and wellbeing, Dorset’s unique environment, our climate ambitions and recognised best practice.”

This sets an model for others to follow and demonstrates that the solution to intrusive lighting is not ‘no light’ but ‘good light’.
