The Roman Rally project highlights important sites which provide local communities and visitors with a connection to the history of Cranborne Chase.
Project aims
- To shed light on the Roman occupation of Britain through a series of interactive events for all ages.
- To raise the profile of the key historic features that still exist and can be visited today across the landscape.
Project achievements
- A team of practical conservation volunteers cleared sections of Ackling Dyke, a 22-mile section of Roman road of scrub and overgrown plant life.
- Organised Roman Living History events in partnership with the Ancient Technology Centre, featuring Roman and Iron Age displays of life during the Roman occupation of Britain.
- Living history re-enactment and education at the Chalke Valley History Festival 2022, 2023 and 2024 brought history alive, with visitors experiencing Iron Age Britain, as well as Britain during Roman occupation.
15 practical conservation volunteers gave 312 hours to clear sections of Ackling Dyke
